Hello CPA community and thanks for your help!  This site is an invaluable help for me.  I would love to hear your ideas and slap me with a dead fish if I am thinking wrong ;)

I am just beginning my study of the Wiley Exam Review FAR and REG book and am looking where to get my 21 additional hours of credits to get to 150.

I have:

-Graduated with Major in FIN and ACC in 1999

-129 hours earned from Miami of Ohio

-24 hrs in ACC and 49 hrs in FIN

-6 hrs of Business Law

I need:

-21 more hours(come’on, lol)

After careful research, I want to just get the 21 hrs out of the way FAST and CHEAP.  The hours need to be accredited and member “Vicky” kindly posted a link to LSU’s online classes and they are the cheapest I found so far.  The are accredited by “Southern Association of Colleges and Schools,” which Tennessee accepts.  The classes seem very cheap from what I have researched….$261 not including books.

As I sit and think right now, I think it best to take maybe two ACC classes, then take anything maybe slip in another ACC class but just get it done whether it be “basket weaving” or “intro to leisure”.

----love to hear what you think about that strategy.

Here is what I have earned in ACC:

ACC 221---Intro to Financial Acccounting

ACC 222---Principles of Managerial Accounting

ACC 223---Accounting Systems(don’t remember what this was about, hehe)

ACC 321---Intermediate Fiancial Accounting

ACC 333---Managerial Cost Accounting

ACC 421---Corporate Financial Reporting

ACC 443---Federal Income Tax Accounting

ACC 453---Financial Statement Auditing

Here is what LSU online is offering for $261 for 3hrs of credit:

ACCT 2001 – Introductory Financial Accounting

ACCT 2101 – Introductory Managerial Accounting

ACCT 3001 – Intermediate Accounting---Part I

ACCT 3021 – Intermediate Accounting, Part II

ACCT 3121 – Cost Analysis and Control

ACCT 3221 – Income Tax Accounting I

ACCT 3222 – Auditing

ACCT 4022 – Advanced Accounting

ACCT 4235 – Fraud Auditing and Forensic Accounting

ACCT 4421 – Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting

Questions:

1)  How’s my strategy of taking 2-3 ACC classes and the other hours just taking easy classes and devote the time to CPA Exam study?

2)  From the looks of it the last 3 bold entries are the one’s I could take.  Do you agree, I will be contacting the state of TN board to ask this too?

3)  Any other cheap places to get hours?

Thanks….

I wasn't clear on whether you were studying for the CPA while doing these classes or not ... sounds like your just starting your CPA preparation though. If you are like me and also have a full time job there is no way you will be able to study for the CPA and take classes at the same time. You need to put in generally at least 80-100 hrs for each exam (more for FAR and REG then BEC and AUD ... depending on your strengths as well) over a span of 5-7 weeks, which is more work then a college class generally. I had no social life for a few months while doing the CPA and working so I cannot imagine taking college classes at the same time. If you are studying full time then maybe, but I'd still pick one or the other to attack first. Based on the new international standards being added to the CPA next year I'd say knock of the CPA now before it gets harder.

I was able to finish my master's degree while passing all of the CMA exams, and audit and BEC while working full-time.  However, I would not recommend this approach, and I don't think I would have been as successful if I had been working on FAR or REG with everything else.  Maybe with one or two classes, but not full-time.

This is incredible!! I don't understand your problem!! Are you asking for CPA or some other studies? By the way, have you heard of MiNeeds.com? It really simplifies finding affordable CPA's. I used it to find them for my finance department. Essentially, after I described what I needed on this site, I received several competitive bids from local CPA's. I liked the fact that I didn’t have to call around and negotiate with each, and that CPA's actually came to me.
