I just graduated a few months ago with an economics degree and a specialization in accounting. I have been applying to jobs since fall of last year and besides a few interviews have had no luck with any offers.
So at this point I have decided to study for the CPA exam and take it within 8 months starting Jan 2010. But I feel a bit hesitant as to whether me taking and passing the CPA exam will help me land any entry level positions come next fall or will public accounting firms not consider because I have passed my CPA exam. I dont know what to do at this point as I dont have a job and I feel like me passing the CPA exam will go to waste looking at the state of the economy. What does everyone think.

Well, if your able to take the time to study and take the exam, go for it. You have nothing to lose.
Now, if you HAVE to land a job, then maybe get in somewhere, get some experience and then go from there.
I'm in corporate accounting with Costco. Been there for 18 yrs (last 5 years in accounting) and I'm thinking of getting my license and using it on a part time basis.
Good luck regardless of what you do :)

CPA exam will definitely help with public accounting
jobs.... that is if they ever start hiring again....

I am in a similar situation as you in terms of whether or not passing the cpa will help land a job next year. The only bad thing about taking it, just to take it, is the money factor. You hate to throw money at it, if it really isn't what you want to do or aren't sure if it will land you a job.

I have the CPA license and it isn't helping one bit in finding a job. Be prepared to pay for CPE expenses out of your own pocket if your employer won't.
