Hi everyone, I have a question about reading some posts from the Big4 forum, and I'm wondering if you all could shed some light and throw in your two cents.
In this economy, it's becoming extremely common for new hires to get fired after less than a year. In fact, a lot of my friends (and friends' friend) from the college class of 2007 and 2008 have said they see people being let go after finishing up a busy season. This is a practice that's also become usual in the Big4 firms. So how does a newly unemployed college graduate with less than one year of experience go on to get another job? Would they be out there competing with the new 2010 graduating class for entry level jobs? Would they become less attractive for recruiters (would recruiters be suspcious of why did this person got fired so soon? would they actually see the candidate as less attractive than a new college graduate with no experience because the new college grad, in comparison, is be a cheaper resource)? Or would you be going head to head out there competing for jobs with experienced candidates, where you would become under qualified?
It seems like it's a lose-lose situation. In addition, I'm curious to know what other options would be available to you if you don't plan to jump from a Big4 to a regional public accounting firm. Say the office politics, the pressure of constantly eating hours, and the long 100+ hour weeks have scared you off and now you want to put your accounting degree to different uses. (I mean, there has to be many other positions out there beside the public accounting field, right?) But you only have your 10 month experience as an entry level audit or tax associate. Where would that get you? From the other posts I've read, it seems that a lot of the public accounting exprience doesn't apply, or doesn't look as attractive, to an industry accounting posiiton. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I know many of you aren't HR recruiters, and I don't want a HR/campus career counselor solution. This board has such a diverse array of people from different experiences, I really just want to hear what you have to say.
Thanks!

I am in that situation. I have 6 months experience. Trying hard to get a job now, I'm pretty much competing with new grads. However, I've completed my Masters and most of the CPA so I've done some to separate myself from them, aside from the tax season experience.

I got nailed 6 months at BDO, I end up taking a lot of small jobs (right now a tax associate position with a very small firm @ 15$ HR and a staff accountant at a video game company for 14 HR)
In short, it is the suck.
I check with a lot of HR from Big 4 and bigger regionals, but either they are not recruiting, or want campus fresh (admittingly I botched an interview with E&Y in the summer)
Usually, in better times, a lot of experienced 2-3 years often get burned out and head for corporate, leaving people like us to fill in their shoes on the fly, but now no one is leaving...thus no one is hiring.
My advice is go to your career center site and your state MCPA society, pay the dues, get access to list of accounting firms, and present your situation to them. Sometimes there might just be a break.

It's possible to still get these jobs. Just a lot more difficult. I got laid off from Big 4 after 9 months. I got many interviews after that at top companies. I eventually landed a corporate accounting, financial analyst role at a top firm. If you are really having trouble, I would suggest going to a top MSA program, and utilizing its amazing placement.
