Have been working in individual tax for almost 5 years. Are there more career opportunities in corporate? I dont want to pidgeon hole myself into one concentration. But I do enjoy the complex returns are what I specialize in.

Friends have told me they worked in corporate and were able to get very good jobs in inidustry after working public for some time.

There's so many more 1040's in comparison to business returns. I don't know the ratio, but I know for certain that 1040's beat out every other return.

In terms of work volume, FARB is right. There are many more individual filers than corporate filers, so you'll have plenty of opportunities and a wide variety of clients. Every client is different, and they will be in all walks of life. Individual experience can also get very complex with high net worth clients. (I don't do tax, but I do work in the media industry, so I know firms who do a lot of the tax compliance, consulting, and estate planning work for such clients, who end up being our vendors!) Then again, the wealthy are not the only ones with tax issues, so the other side of the spectrum can also bring many complex cases.

If you want exit opportunities into a wider variety of positions (e.g., large public firms with corporate clients or the tax departments of F500 companies), corporate experience will be important, especially if you want to get into more of the tax consulting side and less of the tax compliance side. The tax department of my company has tax analysts who have gone to law school, and they get to deal with issues involving M&A, international tax, etc., which can also be interesting.
